Thursday October 11, 2012 Ethiopia’s Biggest Cement Plant
Derba MIDROC Cement P.L.C. (DMC), a part of renowned MIDROC Ethiopia group of companies owned by Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi, Ethiopian by birth Saudi Arabian tycoon, is an investment worth Birr 6.06 billion. It includes the capital cost for cement plant, colony and working capital requirements. Derba MIDROC Cement (DMC), Ethiopia’s biggest cement factory located about 70 kilometers north of Addis Ababa in Derba (Oromia Region) has a capacity to produce 8,000 metric tons of Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) and 5,600 metric tons of clinker per day. The main raw material deposits are spread across the valley where the plant is located. To transport raw materials uphill the plant, four high capacity belt conveyors, which are the longest in Africa, have been erected. The plant produces Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) with mix of OPC: PPC at the rate of 30:70. The products are as per the requirements of the Ethiopian National Standard No.En-197. Derba MIDROC Cement (DMC) is the only cement plant in Ethiopia equipped with modern machinery and equipment to let the plant increase the countrys annual cement production to over 9 million tons per annum. Derba alone can manufacture 2.5 million tons of the total annual country cement production. According to the current supply and demand gap, Derba is believed to contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s self-sufficiency in cement for the coming two to three years.
